Top 5 Steps to Defeat Asthma – Natural Treatment

Suffering with Asthma every day is like having an extra job trying to control the symptoms. It only takes one day when the air pollution is higher than normal causing you to wheeze so bad you can’t make it into work. The cold air hitting your lungs causes you to have an asthma attack so you stay home more than going out. You resort to your medication to keep your asthma at bay. Does this sound like you?

Choosing a natural treatment for asthma may be what you need not only to relieve your symptoms but to heal your body from the inside.

#1. Asthma (Natural Treatment)Health Asthma

Asthma is an inflammatory reaction to allergens and irritants. Before we can deal with the inflammation it’s important to start the process of treating your asthma naturally by analyzing your environment.

Remove all allergens and irritants that may trigger an asthma attack: chemicals, aerosol sprays, animal dander, certain medications, molds, perfumes, pollens, sulfites, to name a few.

Jane had asthma since she was 5, (61 years ago) but had it well controlled until about 14 years ago. Then in spring she would have to wear a filter mask when she walked her dog or end up with an asthma attack. This went on for 3 years. After learning how toxic the indoor air was in her home, she removed all chemical allergens and have not had to use a filter mask or had an asthma attack in 10 years. She credits not having the chemical allergens in the house to compound the outdoor allergens.

Jane made one change to her environment and as you can see it made a dramatic difference in her breathing and ability to go outside without having an asthma attack.

#2. Asthma (Natural Treatment)

Our diets are one of the main sources of inflammation that we face daily. We eat at least three times per day, and that repetitive level of inflammation needs to be addressed if you are ever to get off some of your medication and breathe more easily.

Eat more anti-inflammatory foods like: apricots, cruciferous vegetables, onions, papaya, pumpkin and tomatoes. Foods to avoid: Citrus fruits, dairy products, dyes and preservatives, sugar and wheat.

#3. Asthma (Natural Treatment)

People with asthma need to pay particular attention to fats because good fats are anti-inflammatory. Omega 3 fatty acids have an anti-inflammatory effect, while Omega 6 fatty acids promote inflammation. We tend to eat foods high in Omega-6 fatty acids. Good examples of omega-3 fatty acids are those in fish. Increase your intake of fish (or take a high quality fish oil supplement), nuts, olive oil while decreasing the amount of canola oil, and processed food of any kind.

#4. Asthma (Natural Treatment)

Probiotics are beneficial bacteria that live in our gut and are commonly destroyed by the antibiotics we take regularly. Supplementing with probiotics can help heal asthma naturally from within.

#5. Asthma (Natural Treatment)

Often times, asthmatics are depleted of crucial nutrients due to the chronic inflammation in the body. Take a high quality nutritional supplement which supplies all the vitamins and minerals important to the immune system.

This 5 step Asthma Natural Treatment will absolutely influence how well you breathe and start healing your body from the inside.

Why You Need The Flu Shot

Health 2The flu shot will help protect you from this virus during the season. Not only will it keep you healthy and get you through the whole year but it is also a good idea to get yourself vaccinated if you are around children and elderly people. If you fall ill, there is a big chance that people around you fall ill too and this could get dangerous for those who do not have a good immune system.

Those Who Are At Risk

Children and senior citizens suffering from various diseases related to the lungs or heart and smokers are often most at risk. A simple case of flu could lead to ear infections, bronchitis and even pneumonia in these people. In fact, those over the age of 65 should also consider taking the pneumonia vaccine during this season.

Even though a healthy individual may only suffer from this virus for a few days and then get back to routine, one dose a year will not do you any harm and it could help protect the people around you. Only those who are allergic to the vaccine or any of the ingredients present in it should avoid taking it. Children below the age of 6 months should also not be given the dose.

When to Get the Shot

It takes about two weeks after you get the injection for the antibodies to build up in your system. This means that you should ideally get vaccinated as soon as possible. Waiting a little longer will only increase the chances of the virus entering your body before the antibodies have taken effect. The shot will then not be able to fight off the flu. However, you should also remember that it is never too late to get the vaccine. Even if you take it in February, it could still protect you from getting ill in March. A few minutes to get yourself protected will help you control the sick days at the office and also cut down on the insurance costs.

Ways You can Get the Flu Shot

If you are scared of needles, it shouldn’t prevent you from getting the flu shot this year. Small children have the option of nasal spray flu vaccine so that they do not feel any pain at all while being given the dose. However, this spray is not recommended for women who are pregnant. Adults also have the option of intradermal flu vaccine. The fine needle used to give this dose only penetrates the skin so you will not feel any pain. Those suffering from an egg allergy can also get a cell-based vaccine.

Understanding Chiropractic Treatment

A Chiropractor is a health expert who deals with matters related to the spine. By understanding X-rays and getting a detailed case history, they use spinal adjustment techniques in order to reduce any interference that is experienced with its functioning and thus aim to make you healthier. It is the belief of chiropractic treatment that a well-functioning spine and nervous system can help improve the overall functioning of your entire body.

Benefits of Visiting A Chiropractor

• Get More Flexible: Health ChiropracticYour range of motion and flexibility often improves after undergoing treatment regularly. Chiropractors are trained to give you exercises that will help you stretch your muscles and strengthen them. When the muscles get stronger, they become more flexible and also help you recover faster if you get injured.

• Improve Your Sports Performance: Most trained athletes have regular sessions to help them improve their performance. These exercises and spinal adjustments help your muscles get to their full potential so that you can get fit and improve your performance when playing sports.

• Recover Faster: This treatment helps to control and limit the inflammation that is present in the body. When this happens, recovery periods are shortened and your body will be able to heal faster.

• Reduce or Get Rid of Pain: This is the most sought after reason for chiropractic care. People who are suffering from pain due to a chronic disorder or an injury look for alternative treatments that will help reduce the pain or get rid of it. The exercises and adjustments help to strengthen muscles and release endorphins into the blood. Blood circulation also improves. Together, pain experienced in the body is reduced and many people heal faster.

• Release the Tension in your Muscles: When your muscles are tense, the circulation in your body gets impeded. This impeded circulation then causes muscles to contract and get tense, starting a vicious cycle. Have you ever felt a knot in your muscles? This is the result of their contraction. Through rehabilitative treatment and myofacial release, chiropractors can help to relieve this tension and make you feel better.

• Eliminate Scar Tissue: Tense muscles, if left untreated, develop scar tissue over time. This tissue is only about 60% as effective and flexible as the normal muscle. As you get older, you will start to get pain and not be able to function as well. Various methods are used by chiropractors in order to eliminate the scar tissue.

• Think More Clearly: The cognitive ability of a person is often improved after chiropractic care. Since your body is able to work at an optimum level, all the organs will function better.

• Improve Your Breathing and Sleeping: Common effects of this treatment are your breathing and sleeping patterns. Since the adjustment helps remove the tension in your muscles and helps you relax, you will be able to sleep better. Breathing is also improved as a result of this.

Prescription for Death

LET’S say you’re visiting your doctor (for whatever reason).

You’ve described your symptoms, and he or she has whipped out their prescription pad and is about to suggest some medication.

It might be for depression, or insomnia, or high blood pressure, or raised cholesterol levels, or diabetes, or (the list goes on and on).

But does it ever occur to you that this might not be the best course of action? Or do you just assume that doctor knows best?

Deaths

Well, maybe this is true some of the time. But there are a few things you need to be aware of.

I don’t want to worry you, but did you know, for example, that prescription drugs are more dangerous and cause more deaths than heroin and cocaine combined?

Four years ago it was estimated that the rate of fatalities was higher than that caused by motor accidents and equivalent to a plane crashing every day for six months. In 20 U.S. states unintentional prescription drug overdose is one of the leading causes of death.

Back in 2007, around 27,500 people died from unintentional overdoses. So goodness knows what the figure is now. (I’ve no idea what the statistics are like for the UK, although presumably they’re comparable).

Disturbing

Even if they don’t kill you, they might give you amnesia, vision problems, general aches and pains, compulsive behavior or disturbing dreams. In extreme cases, people can behave violently while they’re asleep, or become suicidal (which could have the same outcome).

Overdosing with medication is only one of the causes of the fatalities, McGill University researchers found. Doctors are partly to blame, often by prescribing multiple drugs at the same time. But it seems it’s just that a lot more prescriptions are being written nowadays.

Apart from the chance of finishing you off, serious side effects include partial paralysis, heart attacks, stroke and even cancer.

According to drugwatch.com, a drug that’s supposed to help the symptoms of diabetes has been linked to an 80 per cent increased risk of bladder cancer in people taking it for two years or longer.

Wary

But you can’t lay it all on the medics.

There’s an expectation now among the public that if you don’t feel well, you go to the doctor. And you also expect to walk out the door with a prescription for something or other that you hope will make you feel better-right away!

This didn’t use to be the case. It’s gradually gotten worse over the years. Maybe one of the reasons is the number of over-the-counter medications you see advertised on television every night. Maybe people think they’ll get something that’s even better from their doctor, or (in the UK, at least) because it’s free.

Here’s another thing to remember. You’re quite likely to suffer a bad reaction from whatever drug is prescribed. The International Journal of Clinical Pharmacy reported in 2012 that nearly two thirds of people taking a prescription drug will come off worse from the experience. Doctors say that just over half of their patients will experience an adverse reaction. Pharmacists put the figure at 61 per cent.

Contra-indications

You should always read the information which accompanies the drug. Pay particular attention to any contra-indications or side effects (one of which is quite likely to be “death”)

Maybe I’m unusual, but I’ve never taken anything stronger than aspirin, other than the occasional antibiotic, and that only in emergencies. I’m very wary of antibiotics anyway, which, because of over-prescribing, are in many cases no longer effective.

If I feel I have something that needs treatment, I try Googling “natural remedies for (whatever it is)”. There’s always something that’s worth a try.

Obviously, you should always cross-check with two or three sources to see if any particular remedy has side-effects or contra-indications. But if it seems okay it’s probably worth a try.

After all, it’s likely to be safer than anything you’ll get from your local surgery.

NOTE: If you’re currently on medication of any kind, check with your health advisor that it’s safe to stop or cut down.

5 Ways To Get You Motivated About A Healthy Lifestyle

It’s that time of the year when people vow to make changes. Maybe it’s time to quit smoking, learn another language or take that kickboxing class you’ve been putting off all of last year. Regardless of what it is, you want to improve yourself in one way or another. One of the most common resolutions that people make is to get in better shape. It’s no coincidence that January is the month when gyms rack up the most enrollments. How many of these new members will you see still see there in April? If you really want to make changes, do it in a way that will set you up for long term success. Don’t flip a switch and decide that you’re all of a sudden a fitness enthusiast. That’s a recipe for failure. Here are five ways that you can make your new venture a successful one.

Create a Plan

Plan your day from beginning to end. From the time you wake up to the time you plan to retire for the night. Plan the day and times for laundry, grocery shopping and so on. Once you’ve done that, pick three days that you cleared your schedule to exercise for 45 minutes. It can be at home or at a gym so plan commute time accordingly. If waking up early before work is your best option, plan to get to bed earlier so you can wake up ready to go. If you plan to go after work, bring a gym bag to work so that you don’t have to stop home afterwards. Once you consistently go three times a week, try adding a fourth day to the mix.

Make Gradual Changes

Bad habits didn’t develop overnight and they can’t be undone in that manner either. These toxins that we rely on have addictive properties that are hard to shake. The probability of quitting smoking by going from three packs a day to none at all is highly unlikely. Just like with everything else, it takes time and a consistent effort. The same goes with eating sugars, drinking coffee and a sedentary lifestyle. Take small steps in the right direction. Start with reducing the amounts of sugars you eat. Make a goal every week to eat less and less sugar. From drinks to foods, gradually phase them out of your diet. While doing this, try to sneak some exercise into your routine. If three times a week seems extreme, try two times, maybe for thirty minutes to start. Then lengthen your workouts and up your weekly visits as you get more accustomed to that lifestyle.

Set Goals For Yourself

Set goals to eliminate bad foods from your diet, to get to the gym and to improve your current fitness level. Allow yourself 50 grams (if you consume more than that) of sugar for the week and 2 gym visits. Practice pushups until failure. If you can do 6 repetitions at the moment, set a goal for to reach 10 repetitions in three weeks for example. Keep setting new challenges and new goals that will build on your previous results. Not only will it keep you more engaged in your workouts, it will let you track your progress.

Challenge Friends

You held a plank for one minute for your first time. You’re excited, now challenge a friend or coworker to do the same. You did it, now see how long it takes them to do it. Maybe a weight loss challenge, who can do the most pushups or hold the longest plank. The more people engaged, the easier it becomes. You may even find a gym partner, which is the best way to push yourself through those rough days that you probably wouldn’t make it. You can’t let your gym partner go alone, they need you!

Don’t Listen To Bad Advice

If you seek advice or nutrition counseling, go to a professional and disregard what anyone else has to say. Follow their advice and see where it leads you over a three month period. Don’t give up after a week because you aren’t seeing results. Only take advice from one person at a time. If you hired a personal trainer or dietician, take their advice and their advice only. The more people you ask for advice, the more contradictory information you will receive. Everyone has their own opinion or some silly fad diet that worked for them or how to build muscle or lose weight. Don’t look for shortcuts or a quick and easy fix because there aren’t any. Pace yourself throughout the journey and enjoy each step you take.

Natural Antibiotics and Probiotics

If you have ever been bitten by a wild animal, received a nasty cut, or perhaps were the unlucky recipient of a sexually transmitted disease, your friendly doctor probably prescribed you antibiotics. Antibiotics are medications that kill off, or slow down the growth of bacteria. Penicillin and Amoxicillin are two commonly prescribed antibiotics.

The problem with synthetic antibiotics is the human body’s ability to become resistant to these medications. Every time you take an antibiotic, your body builds up more of a tolerance towards it. Therefore, taking antibiotics for every bacterial related illness you catch, weakens the body’s ability to fight off infection. The good news is that there are ways to prevent infection and boost your immune system without these drugs!

Long before Alexander Fleming, a Nobel Prize winning bacteriologist, discovered these antibacterial medications, they existed naturally in different foods and herbs. Natural antibiotics and antimicrobials occur largely in onions and garlic, herbs, honey, cabbage, and fermented foods such as raw unpasteurized sauerkraut, raw pickles, and probiotic yogurt. All of these foods boost your immune system and have antibiotic properties. These foods support healthy digestion and will help your body’s defense against infectious diseases.

Foods high in vitamin C such as Cabbage, Kale, Oranges and citrus fruits, Tomatoes, Papaya, Bell Peppers, and Kiwi all have great immune boosting natural antibiotic properties. These fruits and vegetables are packed with antioxidants that help protect cells against free radicals (unstable molecules) that may cause cancer.

Raw sauerkraut, raw pickles, and probiotic yogurt contain good microorganisms that aid in digestion. This good bacteria replaces bad bacteria in the gut, providing further defense against infection. Eating a diet high in these types of foods will help you fight off bad bacteria and improve your overall health and wellbeing.

What about the Onions and Garlic you ask? Onions and garlic contain natural antibacterial properties in the form of sulfur compounds. These compounds and are used as anti-inflammatories and help protect the body against colds and flu.

Honey’s natural antibiotic properties were discovered way before doctor prescribed medicines were created. Honey has a naturally occurring enzyme that releases hydrogen peroxide in the body. Hydrogen peroxide has the ability to stop the growth of different types of bacteria that could otherwise spread and cause illness.

Herbs such as aloe, licorice and just about any other herb you can think of have good antibacterial properties that will help in the fight against infection. Aloe has is commonly applied to cuts, scraps, and burns to provide faster healing and prevent bacterial infection. It is also active against herpes simplex type 1 and type 2. Licorice is active against strep, e-coli, staph infection, and even tuberculosis.

These all natural antibiotics when incorporated into your daily diet will promote a strong immune system. When your body needs a little backup to fight against an army of bacteria, consuming these foods will aid in your body’s defense. So the next time you feel a cold coming on, scrape your knee, or burn your hand on that dinner pot, reach for a natural antibiotic to aid in your quick recovery!

All You Need to Know About Generic Drugs

Generic drugs are cheaper than their branded counterparts are. Consumers save billions of dollars every year when they opt for generic over branded medicine. These two types of drugs may be light-years away in terms of pricing, but they are identical in terms of chemical composition. With respect to their innovator counterparts, generic medications contain the same active ingredients, have the same indications, and are bioequivalent such that they have the same dosage, strength, and route of administration.

How similar are generic drugs to branded drugs?

Since generic medications are essentially similar to branded versions, they are equally effective in dealing with the symptoms that the patient presents with. Since they work in the same way, the patient can expect the same quality at a much lower price. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) can offer the assurance that generic medications have the same purity, strength, and stability as their branded counterparts.

How do drug patents work?

While the patent for the drugs are in effect, only the company that developed the drug can sell it. The patent is intended to protect the investments made by the company on drug development. While it is in effect, no other pharmaceutical company can produce or sell the drug. The period of exclusivity eventually expires. Most of the patents that are given to drug companies last for 20 years. When the patent no longer covers the drug, the pharmaceutical company can apply to the Food and Drug Administration for the right to sell the drug as a generic product. To ensure that end-users receive the same quality of care they receive from branded medications, the FDA only approves generic drugs that meet the highest standards. This is how generic versions become available to the public.

Why are generic drugs cheaper than branded medications?

When a drug is no longer covered by a patent, companies other than the primary developer can then manufacture the drug and sell it as a generic version. The other companies that decide to join in the fray do not have to invest on drug development anymore. Since there is no need to spend on certain aspects of drug production and patents, the costs incurred are less. This is the main reason why generic drugs do not cost as much as branded ones. Nevertheless, the companies that produce the drugs for marketing to the masses must still fulfill the requirements given by the FDA and prove that the drugs work as they should, and are safe to use as well.

Do all branded drugs have generic counterparts?

Unfortunately, not every branded drug has a generic counterpart. However, the drugs that do have generic counterparts can be safely taken in, including medicines that can only be purchased from the pharmacy with a doctor’s prescription. You can find out if the prescribed medication that you need has a generic version from consulting FDA-released listings. The list of generic drugs can be accessed online. You can conduct a quick search by encoding either the generic name or the active ingredient. While you are still consulting with your physician, you can also ask if the drug that he or she is prescribing for your ailment has a generic version.

5 Tips for Caregivers Supporting Stroke Recovery

A stroke sufferer’s caregiver plays a critical role during the recovery phase, especially as the time spent in hospitals and rehabilitation facilities decrease. Recovery can lasts up to two years after the initial stroke onset. Most of that time will be spent at home. While providing care for a stroke patient can be rewarding for a loved one, it can also be stressful and frustrating. That stress can increase depending on the physical aspects of care. Coping with situation is vital to a healthy caregiver and well-adjusted patient.

Here are 5 tips for caregivers supporting stroke recovery of a loved one:

Educate Yourself

The more you know about strokes and stroke recovery the more confident you will be and the better you will be able to take care of your loved one. Take advantage of every opportunity to learn about your loved one’s specific condition and prognosis. Take part in support groups or programs that are offered by the hospital. Talk with health care staffers about what the stroke recovery process will be.

Participate in Stroke Rehabilitation

It’s not unusual for caregivers to attend some therapy sessions so that you can support your loved one. This gives you the opportunity to personally encourage the stroke survivor to practice new skills. Be supportive but don’t always jump in to help. Allow survivors to do things for themselves. The idea is for them to feel self-reliant and confident.

Assess Your Loved One’s Needs and Your Ability to Meet Them

Often caregivers are unaware of the responsibilities at hand. Caregivers often must:

• Provide personal care such as bathing and dressing
• Coordinate health care needs including sorting medications and organizing doctor and rehab appointments
• Manage finances and insurance coverage
• Help the survivor maintain and increase their ability to function

It’s important to be realistic with yourself about what you can take on and what you may need help with. Consult the survivor’s health care team to help you figure out what kind of help is needed and whether this is something you can do.

Take Care of You

Caregiving is similar to becoming a parent for the first time and having a huge learning curve. It is important to take care of your needs as you take care of your loved one. Caregivers have been known to experience anxiety, guilt, depression, fear and resentment that they are giving up their life. Be patient with yourself, don’t lose your own life, focus on your physical and emotional health, and remember to laugh.

Get Support

Find a support group by calling your local hospital or through an online search for caregiver support. Talking to other caregivers can help you feel less alone and provide an opportunity to share resources and caregiving tips.
