Even if they don’t kill you, they might give you amnesia, vision problems, general aches and pains, compulsive behavior or disturbing dreams. In extreme cases, people can behave violently while they’re asleep, or become suicidal (which could have the same outcome).

Overdosing with medication is only one of the causes of the fatalities, McGill University researchers found. Doctors are partly to blame, often by prescribing multiple drugs at the same time. But it seems it’s just that a lot more prescriptions are being written nowadays.

Apart from the chance of finishing you off, serious side effects include partial paralysis, heart attacks, stroke and even cancer.

According to, a drug that’s supposed to help the symptoms of diabetes has been linked to an 80 per cent increased risk of bladder cancer in people taking it for two years or longer.


But you can’t lay it all on the medics.

There’s an expectation now among the public that if you don’t feel well, you go to the doctor. And you also expect to walk out the door with a prescription for something or other that you hope will make you feel better-right away!

This didn’t use to be the case. It’s gradually gotten worse over the years. Maybe one of the reasons is the number of over-the-counter medications you see advertised on television every night. Maybe people think they’ll get something that’s even better from their doctor, or (in the UK, at least) because it’s free.

Here’s another thing to remember. You’re quite likely to suffer a bad reaction from whatever drug is prescribed. The International Journal of Clinical Pharmacy reported in 2012 that nearly two thirds of people taking a prescription drug will come off worse from the experience. Doctors say that just over half of their patients will experience an adverse reaction. Pharmacists put the figure at 61 per cent.


You should always read the information which accompanies the drug. Pay particular attention to any contra-indications or side effects (one of which is quite likely to be “death”)

Maybe I’m unusual, but I’ve never taken anything stronger than aspirin, other than the occasional antibiotic, and that only in emergencies. I’m very wary of antibiotics anyway, which, because of over-prescribing, are in many cases no longer effective.

If I feel I have something that needs treatment, I try Googling “natural remedies for (whatever it is)”. There’s always something that’s worth a try.

Obviously, you should always cross-check with two or three sources to see if any particular remedy has side-effects or contra-indications. But if it seems okay it’s probably worth a try.

If waking up early before work is your best option, plan to get to bed earlier so you can wake up ready to go. Make Gradual Changes
